Drill Chuck

The core function of a drill chuck relies on three key parts:

1. Jaws (The Clamp): Most chucks have three independent, adjustable jaws that move radially inward or outward. When closed, these jaws center and firmly grip the shank of the drill bit or other tool.
2. Body/Shell: The main cylindrical housing that protects the internal mechanisms.
3. Key or Collar (Mechanism):
   • Keyed Chuck: Uses a chuck key (a small, toothed wrench) to manually tighten the jaws onto the tool shank, providing maximum gripping force.
   • Keyless Chuck: Uses a knurled collar or sleeve that the operator twists by hand to open and close the jaws. These are faster and more convenient but typically offer less gripping force than a keyed chuck.
