How a Cutoff Machine Works
The key distinguishing feature of a cutoff machine is its blade and operation:
- Cutting Disc: It uses a high-speed, circular abrasive disc (often called a cutoff wheel) rather than a traditional toothed blade like a wood saw. This disc operates similar to a very thin grinding wheel.
- Cutting Action: The material is cut by the abrasive friction of the disc spinning at extremely high RPMs, which rapidly grinds away the material.
- Design: For benchtop models (which are the most common for metal), the motor and cutting wheel are mounted on a pivoting arm attached to a fixed base plate. The operator pulls the arm down to cut the workpiece.
- Clamping: The machine typically includes a built-in vise or clamp to secure the workpiece (like pipe or angle iron) securely to the base, ensuring accurate, square cuts.
